Swap File

Technology / Computers / Swap File: A swap file is an area on your hard disk used as virtual memory. It's called a swap file because virtual memory management software swaps data between it and main memory (RAM). In the Windows Operating System, a temporary swap file can be configured only when the system needs it. In a Linux and Unix environment, permanent swap files are used which dedicate a certain portion of hard drive space.
